Severe heat wave likely over eastern and southern peninsular India till May 3: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday, April 28, that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to continue over eastern and southern peninsular India for the next five days.

The IMD said rain and thundershowers are likely over the western Himalayan region and adjoining plains of northwest India until April 29. Heavy rainfall is very likely over Northeast India till April 30 and is likely to intensify thereafter.

Amid the prevailing but weakening El Nino conditions, the IMD had earlier warned of extreme heat during the April-June period when around a billion people are expected to exercise their voting rights during the seven phases of the Lok Sabha elections, causing the concerns about vulnerability to heat waves are increasing. . Voting for the first two phases is over.

The Met office had said that 10 to 20 days of heat wave are expected in the entire April-June period, against the usual four to eight days.

The areas and regions expected to experience a higher number of heatwave days are Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Bihar and Jharkhand. In some places more than twenty heat wave days can occur. The intense heat could strain power grids and lead to water shortages in parts of India.
