A 51-year-old man suspected in a fatal crash in Santa Ana was taken into custody Friday.

Officers responded to the intersection of First and Sullivan Streets around 4:30 a.m. Thursday and found a male pedestrian unresponsive in the roadway, according to Santa Ana police.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later by Orange County Fire Department personnel. His name was not immediately released.

Investigators determined that a motorist traveling west on First Street struck the pedestrian while standing in the roadway and then continued driving west, police said.

Luis Duarte Ibarra of Santa Ana was arrested around 4:45 a.m. Friday in Garden Grove and booked on suspicion of hit-and-run. It is unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.

The car involved in the pedestrian’s collision has also been seized, police said.

The Santa Ana Police Department’s Collision Investigation Unit was conducting an ongoing investigation into the fatal collision.

Anyone with information about the fatal collision was urged to contact Detective K. Catlin at 714-245-8224 or the Santa Ana Police Department’s Traffic Division at 714-245-8200.
