Laois boxer has drug possession case dropped

A boxer who was not in court when he attended a weigh-in in Dublin had a case thrown out at Portlaoise District Court in his absence.

Michael Nevin, 25, of 6 Harpurs Lane, Portlaoise, was charged with possession of cannabis and obstruction at Clonroosk View, Portlaoise on October 18, 2022.

However, at an earlier court hearing, a judge had ordered that the case be dismissed upon payment of €300 to the court’s poor box.

A lawyer for the suspect said the suspect had an international tournament in Poland on Thursday and was at a weigh-in in Dublin.

“He said before closing time today that he would get the money from the court,” the attorney explained.

Judge Nicola Andrews did not want to wait for the defendant.

“I’m not going to hang around because he’s being weighed,” she said.

Before the court ended, the lawyer asked if the case would be retried because €300 had been brought before the court. Judge Andrews agreed to throw out the case.
