CNCCI announces indefinite closure of businesses in Nagaland in protest against extortion

Guwahati: In a bid to protest against the provision of protection money to the underground groups, the Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce & Industries (CNCCI) has started indefinite closure of businesses across the state from Saturday.

Dimapur city started the shutdown on Friday and it started across the state on Saturday

According to CNCCI, harassment of the business community due to extortion can no longer be tolerated.

The forum urged the government to take immediate steps to stop the “unabated” extortions, intimidations and calls by the underground groups.

The entire state of Nagaland looked deserted on Saturday as most businesses and shops were closed.

The CNNCI said banks, educational institutions, government offices and hospitals have been excluded from the scope of the shutdown.

Home Affairs Commissioner Vikeyie Kenya said it has “come to the attention” of the government that “rampant tax collection” from businesses, especially in Dimapur, by various groups, most of which have signed a ceasefire agreement with the government , an unbearable situation.

“Such activities have a negative impact on the law enforcement agencies and the state government,” he said, directing the police to take strict action.

According to CNCCI, the shutdown will continue indefinitely as long as the government does not take satisfactory steps.
