Viral video of Amit Shah saying BJP will scrap reservation of SC, ST and OBCs has been edited

Claim: Amit Shah called for scrapping of reservation quota for SC, ST and OBC.
Fact: The video has been edited. In the original video, Amit Shah calls religious-based reservations unconstitutional and talks about scrapping Muslim reservations in Telangana.

Hyderabad: After the second phase of voting of the 2024 seven-phase Lok Sabha elections, a video of Home Minister Amit Shah stating that the BJP government will end ‘unconstitutional reservation’ of Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) delete, and other Backward Classes (OBCs) are doing the rounds on social media.

“Before you cast your vote, listen to this statement from Home Minister AmitShah asking for an end to reservation. That is why 400 seats are being demanded so that the constitution can be amended,” wrote an video. (Archive)

Fact checking

NewsMeter discovered the claim to be false when the video was edited. In the original video, Shah talks about scrapping the ‘unconstitutional reservation of Muslims if they come to power in Telangana.’

We noticed that the video carried the V6 News logo. Based on this, we searched for the video on V6 News Telugu YouTube channel and found a video published on April 23, 3023, titled ‘Union Minister Amit Shah Comments Muslim Reservations’.

The viral clip appears in the video with a time stamp of 2:38 minutes. “If the BJP government is formed, we will scrap the unconstitutional Muslim reservation. The SC, ST and OBC communities of Telangana deserve this opportunity and they will be granted the same by ending Muslim reservation.”

NDTV published the video on April 24, 2023, titled ‘Amit Shah Vows To Scrap Muslim Quota in Telangana.’

According to the channel, Shah, while addressing the gathering at Chevella, near Hyderabad, denounced religion-based reservations and termed them ‘unconstitutional’. He had vowed to end reservations for Muslims in Telangana if the BJP formed the government in the state.

On April 24, 2023, Times Now also reported that Shah has promised to end the 4 percent Muslim reservation in Telangana if the BJP is voted to power. He had said that religion-based quotas are unconstitutional.
