Dhaka University and Jagannath University are switching to online classes due to health risks due to the heat

Dhaka University and Jagannath University, two of the leading higher education institutions in the country, have opted for online classes to avoid health risks during the heat wave in Bangladesh.

The notice from the University of Dhaka Public Relations Office stated that online classes will continue until further notice. However, scheduled tests would be administered in person.

Jagannath University has announced that it will hold online classes from Monday to April 27. All tests scheduled during this period will be postponed to another time.

The decision was taken at 11 am during an emergency meeting of the university administration headed by Vice Chancellor Prof. Sadeka Halim.

The mercury continued to rise throughout April. In recent days, lives and livelihoods have been at risk. Doctors have advised people to take precautions against the heat.

On Sunday, the government announced a seven-day closure of schools and colleges due to the risk to students.

Moreover, the colleges under the National University have been closed indefinitely.

Two people died due to intense heat in Gazipur’s Pabna and Konabari towns. Doctors believe their deaths were caused by heat stroke.
