The US announced the shipment to Ukraine of a new $6 billion military aid package

The US Secretary of Defense announces a $6 billion military aid package to Ukraine

On Friday, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced a new $6 billion military aid package to Ukraine during a press conference. This assistance includes Patriot missiles, drones, ammunition for HIMARS batteries, advanced artillery ammunition, air defense systems on armored vehicles and maintenance support.

Austin stated that this is the largest aid package Washington has announced to date for Ukraine. The aid is part of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative and aims to provide Kiev with the necessary capabilities to respond to the Russian advance on the eastern front.

The United States has already provided tens of billions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began on February 24, 2022. The Biden administration signed a law this week to gradually give Ukraine $61 billion in military aid and loans.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his gratitude for the assistance, stating that it will allow Ukraine to stabilize the front and make progress toward their goals in the war. However, a US military commander warned that while this aid will help Ukraine regain the initiative, it will not be a quick process.

The Ramstein Group, made up of 50 countries, has also pledged their support to Kiev, with pledges totaling around $95 billion. The group is working to create a self-sufficient Ukrainian army that can contain Russia in the long term.

The announcements of new military aid come after difficult negotiations in the US Congress, resulting in the approval of $95 billion in foreign aid, including $61 billion for Ukraine. The aid is seen as crucial to helping Ukraine push back against Russian forces and achieve their goals in the conflict.
