A 59-year-old woman was killed and the man believed responsible for her death was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his apartment, ending an hours-long standoff at an Anaheim apartment complex on Thursday, April 25. , authorities said.

Anaheim officers were called to the Tyrol Plaza Senior Apartments, 891 S. State College Blvd., about 3:40 p.m. called after a report of a shooting. said Jon McClintock.

The complex is located across the street from Boysen Park.

Officers found the victim, 59-year-old Ana Monterrosa of Anaheim, suffering from at least one gunshot wound and later learned that the man accused of shooting her lived in the complex, McClintock said.

The shooting took place in a common area of ​​the apartment complex, McClintock said, but it was not known whether it took place outside or inside.

Monterrosa was taken to a hospital but died, he said.

The suspect, identified as 67-year-old Brian Lawrence, went back to his apartment after the shooting, McClintock said.

Investigators and SWAT teams were called to the apartment complex and around 9:30 p.m., nearly six hours after Monterrosa was shot, SWAT officers entered Lawrence’s apartment and found him dead, the sergeant said.

Lawrence and Monterrosa knew each other from living in the apartment complex, McClintock said. No further information was available.

Sitting outside the apartment complex after the shooting as police investigated the complex, Joe Guerrero told OnSceneTV, a freelance video news service that sometimes works with the Southern California News Group, that he lived in the apartment complex for five months and spoke with Monterrosa. who was the complex manager when the suspect entered the office.

“(She was) getting paint for my room,” Guerrero said. “The man came up to her and shot her four times. I just couldn’t believe what was happening. He looked at me and then left so I told the other ladies in the office to call 911 because I didn’t have my phone.

Guerrero said the suspect said perhaps three words to Monterrosa before firing from about three feet away.

Police evacuated several residents while investigating the shooting, but helped them return to their homes later Thursday evening, McClintock said.
