Mustapha Ussif wins the African Minister of Sports of the Year award.


Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has been honored as African Minister of Sports of the Year at a ceremony in Abuja, Nigeria.

Under the theme ‘Sport as a Catalyst for Accelerated Tourism Development in Africa’, the event brought together prominent figures from the sports and tourism sectors to recognize individuals and initiatives driving transformative change across the continent.

Ussif, whose leadership oversaw the hosting of the 2023 African Games in Ghana in March, was instrumental in positioning Accra as the Africa City of Sports (ACCRA City of Sports).

His significant contributions to the Ghanaian sporting landscape have received critical acclaim from his peers, culminating in this prestigious award.

Representatives led by Ambassador Inusah Zimblim, Head of Consular and Welfare at the High Commission of Ghana in Abuja, including Jamaludeen A. Abdullah, Executive Assistant to the Minister, Dinah Boateng, Protocol Director at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and Commodore Bassing, Security Adviser at the High Commission, Abuja, received the award on his behalf.

Jamaludeen expressed his gratitude in his acceptance speech, noting: “This award is a testament to the collective efforts of all those who have contributed to Ghana’s sporting success,” adding: “It is in recognition of Ghana’s continued commitment to excellence and innovation in this field of sports.

“On behalf of my boss, I can say that we are deeply honored to receive this prestigious award and we remain steadfast in our commitment to advancing the sporting agenda in Ghana and beyond,” he stated.

The ceremony also celebrated other eminent figures including Senator John Owan-Enoh, Minister of Sports Development of Nigeria, HE Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusa, Chairman of the Nigerian Football Federation, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Founder of Including Heartland FC and Lola Ade-John, the Nigerian Minister of Tourism.
