A Marine assigned to a helicopter training squadron is dead at Camp Pendleton.

A Marine spokesman from the 3rd Marine Air Wing said the death occurred around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, during “routine military operations.”

The cause is under investigation and the Marine’s identity will not be released until next of kin have been notified, the third MAW spokesperson said.

No further details were provided about how the Marine died.

The unit operates at Camp Pendleton Air Station, but the squadron is part of the 3rd Marine Air Wing at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

In February, five Marines from the wing’s Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron died after their CH-53E Super Stallion crashed during a storm in the mountains of eastern San Diego County. In June 2022, five Marines in an MV-22 Osprey stationed at Camp Pendleton were killed when their plane crashed on a remote sandy training area near Glamis.
