The meeting took place as Harris announced a new Small Business Administration rule that lifts some restrictions on loans for people with criminal records. The vice president said, “Making available, reducing and eliminating that limitation will mean a lot in terms of second chances and the opportunity for people to excel.

“Isn’t it a sign of a civil society that we give people a way to earn their way back, and give them the support and resources they need to do that?” The event came a day after President Joe Biden used his clemency powers to pardon 11 people and commute the sentences of five others.

The White House said the individuals received disproportionately long sentences and would have received shorter sentences under current laws and policies. During the meeting, Kim said: “I am super honored to hear your stories here today.
