Huge punishment for fraud syndicate: more than 10,000 years combined

Huge fraud ring dismantled: 10,939 years of sentences handed down

The South Gauteng High Court has imposed a cumulative sentence of 10,939 years on nine people involved in a massive money laundering, fraud and counterfeiting operation. This decision has received widespread approval, especially from the top levels of law enforcement agencies.

Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya, the national head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), expressed his satisfaction with the outcome and emphasized the importance of holding those guilty of financial crimes accountable. “This sends a strong message that financial crimes should not be taken lightly and that perpetrators will face the full force of the law,” he stated.

In 391 cases, the individuals were found guilty of flagrant violations, including money laundering, fraud, forgery and violating several crucial laws, such as those related to birth, death registration and corrupt activities. It detailed how the suspects engaged with entities registered under the Companies Act between 2009 and 2016, manipulatively registering their companies for VAT refunds to which they were not entitled.

The suspects fraudulently claimed VAT refunds from the South African Revenue Services (SARS) and submitted forged invoices in support of their claims, leading to the illegal acquisition of approximately R300 million. “The entities in question were inactive and had no real business activities during the claim period, unnecessarily harming SARS and, by extension, the South African taxpayer,” the DPCI explains.

Of the initially thirteen people charged, nine faced a conviction; two unfortunately died during the trial, and two became state witnesses. The announced sentences were exceptionally long, but the court nevertheless decided on more rational prison sentences, taking into account extenuating circumstances. For example, Jeremiah Nyasha Musiwacho Dube and Mavudzi Maxwell Ndlovu, who both receive more than 3,000 years, will actually serve 65 years each. Likewise, less egregious roles received correspondingly lighter but still substantial penalties.

However, the case is not completely closed yet as Christopher Dube is still at large after going into hiding before his sentencing, with a warrant for his arrest.
