The price of fish and chips will rise because of the weather

The price of fish and chips is expected to rise due to months of heavy rainfall affecting vegetable oil production. Floods have devastated Britain’s oilseed rape crops and hampered planting for the coming harvest.

As a result, revenues are expected to fall by 38% this year, which is bad news for chippie fans. With sunflower oil prices skyrocketing due to the war in Ukraine, Britain has become dependent on rapeseed oil.

Trade magazine The Grocer warns that chippies, restaurants and catering companies will be affected. Analysts estimate that climate change has added £361 to the average annual UK food bill.

Tom Lancaster of the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit said: “We are seeing a double whammy in cooking oil.”

“Whether it’s Spanish olive oil or British vegetable oil, climate extremes are damaging crops and consumers are paying for it at the supermarket checkout.”

“The failure of the UK rapeseed oil crop could lead to a rise in vegetable oil prices.”

“Extremes like this, both in the UK and abroad, will only worsen until we reach net zero emissions, making it essential to protect our food security.”
