The phrase “spotted on the steps of the Met” may have only been applied once Gossip girls Serena Van der Woodsen, but in 2024 the stair entrance to the Metropolitan Museum of Art will be home to fashion’s biggest night: the Met Gala.

Since its first fundraiser in 1948, the Met Gala has become synonymous with luxury, couture and some of the best celebrity red carpet looks of all time.

As we count down the days until The Garden of Time theme envelops New York, we round up what you need to know about the 2024 Met Gala.

What is the Met Gala?

The Costume Institute Benefit, better known as the Met Gala, is an annual fundraising dinner for the Costume Institute of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Every year the Costume Institute holds an exhibition open to the public, but the Met Gala typically served as the exhibition’s opening night, with each of the guests arriving in an outfit that tied in with the exhibition’s theme.

With a guest list of up to 700 people, the Met Gala raises valuable funding to preserve the Costume Institute’s textile arts, with tickets for the 2023 Met Gala costing more than $50,000 USD per person.

What is the Met Gala theme?

The theme for the 2024 Met Gala is Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, with the dress code theme being The Garden of Time.

According to Fashion, the exhibition spans more than four centuries of fashion history and features striking designs from Schiaparelli, Dior, Givenchy and many other designer brands.

The exhibition also includes a combination of “video animation, light projection, AI, CGI” and various other sensory elements to encapsulate nature in zones of land, sea and air.

In typical Met Gala fashion, the dress code is relatively open, but we can definitely expect ethereal fairytale fashion on the 2024 red carpet.

The 2024 Met Gala will take place on Monday, May 6, 2024 at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Who’s going to the Met Gala?

The Met Gala guest list is normally kept under wraps until the big day, but we can expect 2024 Gala co-chairs Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth and Bad Bunny to all walk the red carpet.

Although their presence has not yet been confirmed, fans will be keeping a close eye on Met Gala favorites Blake Lively, Rihanna and Sarah Jessica Parker.
