USC cancels its main commencement ceremony as protests roil the campus

The University of Southern California canceled its main commencement ceremony, citing new security measures implemented in the days since the Los Angeles school was rocked by student-led protests against the war in Gaza.

The university announced Thursday the cancellation of the May 10 main stage ceremony, a day after more than 90 students were arrested on campus. USC is one of dozens of colleges and universities where protests take place on campus just weeks before commencement; Several have resulted in violence and arrests as police tried to clear student encampments that had popped up on school grounds.

The cancellation of Thursday’s main commencement ceremony also comes amid tensions after school officials recently announced that they will not allow this year’s valedictorian, who is Muslim and shares pro-Palestinian views, to speak at commencement, citing vague concerns about safety.
