Jimmy Lai, Archbishop of San Francisco presides over the Holy Hour and prays for Hong Kong

CV NEWS FEED // The Archdiocese of San Francisco, California will hold a Holy Hour for persecuted Chinese Christians in May, followed by a presentation on Jimmy Lai, a Chinese Catholic and human rights activist currently on trial in Hong Kong.

Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone will preside over the Holy Hour and lead a rosary, offering special prayers for Cardinal Joseph Zen and Jimmy Lai, on May 8 at St. Patrick’s Seminary and University in Menlo Park, California. Immediately following the Holy Hour, Lai’s godfather and noted Wall Street Journal columnist William McGurn will give a presentation entitled, “The Prison Witness of Jimmy Lai.”

British citizen Jimmy Lai is a Catholic journalist, Hong Kong businessman and human rights activist who was arrested in Hong Kong in 2022 for allegedly violating the region’s national security law by criticizing the Chinese government in his newspaper, the Apple Daily.

Lai has been in prison for almost three years and his trial started in December 2023. He is 76 years old.

In February, the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation published a report warning that religious freedom in Hong Kong is collapsing under pressure from the anti-religious Chinese Communist Party.
