Ex-prison guard accused of sexual misconduct; The state says she had an inmate’s baby

BUSHNELL – A former state prison guard at Sumter Correctional Institute is now on the wrong side of bars after being arrested and accused of having sex with an inmate, causing her to have his child.

Rachel Drumm, 38, of Yalaha, was arrested April 12 in Lake County and charged with sexual misconduct with Jonathan Marrero, 44, between February 9, 2020 and March 30, 2021.

Marrero was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2001 for two armed robberies in Jacksonville. He is now in the Suwannee Correctional Institute Annex and is expected to be released next year.

Drumm gave birth to the child on November 15, 2021 and named Marrero as the father. About a week later, she began sending photos of the baby to Marrero through his inmate’s email account, telling the child to “say goodnight to Dada,” according to court records. According to the Public Prosecution Service, she also posted photos of the child on Facebook.

Drumm, 38, worked at the prison starting in 2018 and resigned on December 28, 2020, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.

Marrero was convicted of armed robbery in Jacksonville in 2000 and sentenced to 30 years in prison.

If convicted of the third-degree felony, Drumm could face up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. The investigator handling the case asked for no bail.

Marrero, who is now incarcerated in the Suwanee Correctional Institution annex, will be released next year, according to the state Department of Corrections website.
