Advice | How to play Operation in Idaho and other anti-abortion states?

“No one is suggesting that a woman is not an individual and that she does not deserve stabilization.” — Samuel A. Alito Jr., Supreme Court Justice. during oral arguments Wednesday for Idaho v. United Stateson whether federal law can require hospitals to perform emergency abortions in states with bans.

“I think the premise of the question would be that the state of Idaho can declare that she cannot receive the stabilizing treatment even if she is going to die.” — Attorney General Elizabeth B. Prelogar, advocates for the federal government.

Thank you for purchasing this updated copy of the classic game Operation! This edition transforms old patient Cavity Sam into Cavity Samantha and features a vastly expanded card deck with playable cards that go far beyond the previous, limited world of ‘doctor’ and ‘specialist’.

We’ve received many questions from our loyal customers about this game, including: “Why?” and “How do court decisions change what emergency care our patients receive?” We’ve covered them below.

Q: I got Operation because I was excited about a game where I could practice life-saving operations on a cute cartoon character that buzzed when I did it wrong. I love my Cavity Samantha, but I’m confused by the gameplay. When exactly can I operate?

A: Thank you for purchasing Operation: Post-Roo! Sorry you’re confused. If it makes you feel better, it does for everyone!

Q: But with Cavity Sam I didn’t have this problem.

A: That’s because Cavity Sam is always a person no matter where you operate. That does not apply to Cavity Samantha. That’s just one of the many exciting improvements we’ve made to our gameplay in light of the Dobbs decision. What family doesn’t love hearing the cries of, “Wait! Before you take action to save the patient’s life, let’s see what state we are in! To the rule book!” or “Doctor! Stop here! I am Judge Samuel Alito!”

Q: Actually, I have a question about the inclusion of Judge Samuel Alito as an unavoidable character in this game. Why?

A: What game isn’t more fun with the addition of Justice Samuel Alito?

A: We’ll have to agree to disagree.

Q: Why does my Judge Alito shout, “Stop, Doctor! We must balance the competing interests of Cavity Samantha against those of the unborn child!” in situations where this would be completely pointless – i.e. emergencies where, due to pregnancy complications, the loss of the fetus is unavoidable, but the loss of the life of the person carrying the fetus is not?

A: Ah, you’re making the mistake again of thinking your Cavity Samantha is a person. That’s why we wrote “ONLY ONE PERSON SOMETIMES” in big red letters on the box. Doctors keep forgetting that, and then they lose the game – and their licenses!

Q: What are all these new cards?

A: Great question! We are so excited to introduce the new State Legislature, State Supreme Court, and Vintage 1864 Law cards. Unlike the “doctor” and “specialist” cards, which identified the medically necessary procedure and gave you the opportunity to perform it, these cards do not include any medical expertise and are there to discourage you from operating. If you do, they will ‘take legal action’ and you could face a minimum of two years in prison!

Q: But the patient will die!

A: Oh yeah. Again, Cavity Samantha is only an occasional patient worthy of stabilization.

Q: It’s not fun for me to see the patient die.

A: The patient does not always die! Sometimes she just suffers a debilitating, life-changing injury!

Q: This is not a fun game.

A: It’s not our problem that you don’t see the joy of putting healthcare decisions in the hands of many people who are not doctors, some of whom died in the 19th century.

Q: I want to play the original game.

A: Then move! In some states you can still play the Operation that Americans came to know for decades. But you better hurry – even there you never know when this game will fly off the shelves!
