People were running and screaming, the student recalled

Student Osian George, 15, was outside with friends when panic broke out.

People were running around and screaming, he said. It was very scary, he added.

“Teachers came running out and told us to take lessons and get to class quickly,” he said.

“It was chaos. Everyone was running around like crazy.

“I saw a girl get hurt, she was taken care of, and then I went to class.

“We came into class with no idea what was going on. We waited until we could go outside and see our parents again. I was lucky that I was able to get out safely.”

‘Everyone knows someone at school’

A councilor in the town where two teachers and a student were stabbed said the day had been difficult for everyone because “everyone knows someone at school”.

Calum Higgins, representative of the Pantyffynon ward of Ammanford City Council, said: “It’s generally quite a quiet town, it’s a small town. Everyone knows each other very well. We don’t actually expect something like that to happen.

“Everyone knows someone at school – everyone suddenly got worried and started worrying. It was quite a worrying day, it was difficult for everyone.”

Teaching is dangerous now, says governor

Mair Wyn, who has been governor of Amman Valley School for 34 years, said times have changed and a teacher’s job is now very dangerous.

She said: “It’s a complete shock to the community.

“It is an excellent school. The students are such sweet kids and I can’t understand why this problem has happened. It’s actually incredible.”

Mrs Wyn, whose children went to school and whose husband was head of English, added: “It is a big concern what the future will bring. Discipline has disappeared from the schools. Times have changed. Things are happening now: a teacher’s job is very dangerous.

“I now fear for these two teachers who were injured. Times have changed in the past 10 years.

“In my time you looked up to a teacher, you were afraid of a teacher. But I think every school is at risk. When you think about it, you don’t know what’s around the corner.”
