Courteney Cox shares shocking revelation about ex Johnny McDaid

In a candid revelation about the Minnie questions podcast, Courteney Cox opened up about a pivotal moment in her relationship with Snow Patrol rocker Johnny McDaid.

The Friends star shared the unexpected turn of events during their first therapy session, which was initially intended to strengthen their bond but ended when Johnny ended their engagement within the first minute.

Courteney, 59, reflected on the profound impact of that moment and expressed her gratitude for what was undoubtedly a painful experience at the time.

“Johnny and I broke up five years ago. So three years later we broke up and it was very intense. We broke up in therapy,” she revealed.

The actress was surprised by the breakup, especially since it happened so suddenly while they were discussing their relationship boundaries.

Despite the initial shock and pain, Courteney now sees Johnny’s decision as a courageous act that spurred significant personal growth and ultimately transformed their relationship.

“I didn’t know it was coming. Whether I should have done that or not, it was like going to this therapist to talk about our boundaries – what we could and couldn’t accept from each other,” explained them out.

Instead of holding a grudge, Courteney chose to immerse herself in the experience and work on herself. “And he’s an incredible human being, so he tried not to surprise. He was in so much pain in the relationship,” she said, acknowledging the mutual discomfort that led to their temporary breakup.

Although initially devastating, the breakup became a catalyst for Courteney to dive deep into her own psyche and behavior, guided by the same therapist who was present at their breakup.

“I learned how to reclaim my voice, how to set boundaries, what my motives were in life – like what my part in this was. I’m so grateful for that breakup because when we got back together it was a different relationship , but also because it really taught me how to operate in the world – what were the things from my childhood that I needed,” she said passionately.

The journey through therapy has helped her understand her needs and the ways her past has affected her relationships.

“Whether it was being adored by men. Things I didn’t know how to let go of in a relationship. To not take things personally. My boundaries, I just went into myself and I had a great therapist Courteney added, emphasizing the transformative power of facing one’s problems head-on.

The personal work she did after the breakup not only healed old wounds, but also prepared her for a healthier relationship dynamic after reconciling with Johnny.

“And I’m truly grateful that a) nothing will ever hurt me this much again, and b) most importantly, I have completely changed,” she reflected.

The couple’s decision to downgrade their status from engaged to dating when they reunited may seem unusual to some, but for Courteney it marked a new chapter of understanding and maturity within their partnership.

In 2022, the actress opened up to the possibility of marrying Johnny, bringing their complex journey together full circle.

Courteney, who was previously married to David Arquette from 1999 to 2003, with whom she shares a daughter, Coco, emphasized the courage it takes to end a relationship that is full of passion but may not be good.

“It takes a lot of courage to end something that has so much passion behind it, or to end anything for that matter,” she concluded.
