Aldi is donating 6,100 meals to charities in Berkshire during the school holidays – Reading Today Online

A SUPERMARKET chain with branches in Reading and Wokingham helped donate more than 6,000 meals to community groups over the Easter holidays.

Aldi, now the country’s fourth largest supermarket chain, has teamed up with community platform Neighborly to donate unsold fresh and chilled food to food banks and charities, with the stores linked to a local group.

It said it donated 833,600 meals across the country during the school holidays, of which 6,100 came from its stores in Berkshire.

Liz Fox, national sustainability director at Aldi UK, said: “We know the school holidays can be a particularly challenging time for families, and food banks regularly see increased demand.

“By working with such great charities in Berkshire through our Neighborly partnership, we can give back by providing donations to those who need it most.”

And Steve Butterworth, CEO of Neighbourly, said: “The ongoing cost of living crisis has increased demand for food banks, especially during the school holidays.

“Aldi’s contributions serve as a lifeline for many and provide vital support to enable these causes to continue their vital work within local communities.”

Aldi recently teamed up with Neighborly to launch a fund to provide additional help to families.

Eligible charities within the Neighborly network, such as baby banks and children’s centres, can access micro-grants of £500 to provide immediate support to families in need.
