How Laila Mallya, stepdaughter of Vijay Mallya, became a big name in the fashion industry

Former United Breweries owner Vijay Mallya may now be on the run from the law due to financial scandals, but his stepdaughter Laila Mallya is a successful figure in the fashion industry. The story of Vijay Mallya’s rise and fall is well known. His son Siddharth Malhotra also managed to make headlines during the scandal, but Laila Mallya keeps a low profile in this regard. Vijay Mallya has three daughters, Liana, Tanya and Laila. Of these, Laila Mallya is his stepdaughter. Vijay Mallya married his neighbor Rekha after divorcing his first wife, Sameera. Rekha had two children with her ex-husband Shahid Mehmood, Laila and Kabir Mehmood. Later, Vijay Mallya adopted Laila.

Laila Mallya’s husband Sameer Singh is an investment banker. Laila studied at Aditi International School in Bengaluru and went to the US to study fashion. There she completed her studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York. Previously, she had obtained a degree from Bentley University, Massachusetts. After completing her studies, Laila came back to India and started her career.

She started her career as a jewelry designer and stylist at the prestigious brand Vogue. She then ventured to found her brand Social Butterfly. Lalila outsources its products to Bangalore-based retailer Kahava. In addition to her entrepreneurial activities, Lalila actively participates in numerous fashion week shows, driven by her deep interest in fashion and style.

She worked with former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi during the IPL 2010.

After the conclusion of IPL 2010, Modi was suspended by the BCCI over allegations of misconduct, indiscipline and financial irregularities. Subsequently, the BCCI initiated an investigation into these allegations. In 2013, after a commission found Modi’s culpability in these matters, he was banned from the organization for life. Laila’s name was also mired in controversy after which she quit the IPL scene and focused solely on her other fashion endeavors.
