The study explained how writers determined their choices:

To determine the cities in each state with the shortest life expectancies, Tempo 24/7 reviewed data on life expectancy in U.S. metropolitan areas from County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, a collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Population Health Institute of the University of Wisconsin. Additional data on smoking rates, physical inactivity, and insufficient sleep also came from the 2023 CHR.”
