Valley Mountain Regional Center Announces July 2023 Data Breach Impacting Patient SSNs | Console and employees, PC

On April 19, 2024, Valley Mountain Regional Center (“VRMC”) filed a data breach notification with the Montana Attorney General after discovering that an unauthorized party had accessed information stored on the company’s computer network. In this notice, VRMC explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to consumers’ sensitive information, including their names and social security numbers. Upon completion of the investigation, VRMC began sending data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

What caused the Valley Mountain Regional Center data breach?

The Valley Mountain Regional Center data breach was only recently announced and more information is expected in the near future. However, VRMC’s filing with the Montana Attorney General provides important information about what led to the breach. VRMC also issued a press release discussing the incident.

According to these sources, VRMC detected suspicious activity within its computer network on August 1, 2023. In response, VRMC secured its network and then launched an investigation with the help of outside cybersecurity experts.

Ultimately, the VRMC investigation confirmed that on July 29, 2023, an unauthorized party accessed files stored on the company’s IT network that contained confidential patient information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data had been accessed by an unauthorized party, Valley Mountain Regional Center reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was breached and which consumers were affected. VRMC completed this process on February 20, 2024. While the breached information varies by individual, it may include your name and social security number.

On April 19, 2024, Valley Mountain Regional Center sent data breach letters to everyone affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information about them has been compromised.
