Tackling antimicrobial resistance with a One Health approach, invitation-only symposium and workshop

This is a two-day invitation-only symposium, followed by a one-day policy workshop in New Delhi. If you would like further information please contact [email protected].

This joint symposium and policy workshop, organized by the UK Academy of Medical Sciences and the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), will explore how antimicrobial resistance (AMR) can be tackled with a One Health Approach.

The UK and India, like the rest of the world, face significant challenges from AMR. Because these problems may be similar worldwide, there can be substantial benefits in sharing knowledge and experiences internationally and creating opportunities for international cooperation.

In 2019 the British Academy of Medical Sciences organized a symposium on AMR in London, supported by the Yusuf and Farida Hamied Foundation. It looked at the scale of the AMR problem in both Britain and India, measuring progress and implementing interventions to prevent and control infections. Findings from previous and ongoing collaborative research into the interactions between human health, animal health and the environment were shared and how successes could be applied elsewhere. It was also an opportunity to discuss research and policy actions that could be taken in Britain and India.

We are now organizing a second symposium, followed by a policy workshop in collaboration with the ICMR to examine the progress made in tackling AMR, reflect on the research and policy actions taken in the UK and India since 2019, and agree on the actions that need to be taken next. The symposium and workshop will also be an opportunity to further expand cooperation between Britain and India to tackle the shared problem of AMR, and will be an opportunity to reflect on the outcomes of any partnerships that are built up, including that of the The Academy’s Visiting Fellowship Programalso supported by the Hamied Foundation.
