Kang Min-kyung, Gong Hyo-jin, Somi: Celebrities who sell expensive products because they “participated in their production”

More than once, celebrities have caused public outrage by selling products at an above-average price.

Previously, Davichi’s Kang Min-kyung sold a crunchy for 59,000 won on her online shopping center Àvie muah. Kang Min-kyung claimed that she collaborated with a silk brand and explained: “It is made from 100% silk and uses a very large amount of fabric, approximately 21cm wide, and requires a tricky process due to its high-quality silk properties.” However, the criticism of the unreasonable price did not disappear.

Gong Hyo-jin

Gong Hyo-jin sold a cell phone case made through an upcycling project for 89,000 won. Her intention was good, but most people said they couldn’t understand why the price was too expensive.

Recently, singer Jeon So-mi launched her own beauty brand GLYF with her first product, a highlighter priced at 43,000 won. Because other Korean brands’ highlighter ranged from 23,000 won to 30,000 won, the singer was criticized. In addition, when it started selling, the brand’s official website announced: “Cancellation due to a simple change of mind or an error with the order is not possible due to the nature of the pre-order,” causing a new wave of criticism. In response, Bubble Korea, the company that operates GLYF, explained: “The information report is incorrect. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by providing incorrect information to customers.”

Apparently aware of the controversy, Jeon appeared on the channel of LeoJ, a beauty YouTuber, and explained that she had participated in the process of creating the product. “I paid attention to the color by checking the number of grams of the small pearl. I also checked the durability.”

When celebrities-turned-CEOs face such negative reactions, they often say that they participated in the project and studied and researched the product. Many people believe that this cannot justify the high price of their products.
