At the July elections, care was taken to ensure that Rwanda’s ‘gimmick’ was not given ‘time to fail’, MPs said

Rishi Sunak is rumored to be eyeing the July general election to prevent his deportation from Rwanda having “time to fail”, according to Labor.

Shadow Health Secretary Wes Streeting said Westminster has been “inundated” with rumors about the possibility of a July match, despite the Prime Minister appearing to favor an autumn date.

Streeting’s joke came hours after the parliamentary battle over Rwanda’s security (asylum and immigration law) ended.

The bill forces judges to deem the East African country safe, in a bid to pave the way for sending asylum seekers crossing the Channel in small boats on a one-way flight to Rwanda.

But critics believe the deportation plan introduced by the legislation is unworkable and will have very little impact on the situation.

Speaking on health issues, Mr Streeting told the House of Commons: “Westminster is awash with rumors that the Prime Minister will call a general election in July, presumably to prevent his Rwanda gimmick from having time to fail.

“So I have a very simple question for the Minister: will he repeat the promise the Prime Minister made last year and promise that NHS waiting lists will be lower at the time of the general election than when the Prime Minister took office?”

Health Secretary Andrew Stephenson responded: “The Prime Minister has been very clear that reducing waiting lists is one of his top priorities, but he has also made it clear that performance has been disappointing.

“One of the reasons why performance has been disappointing is that 1.4 million procedures had to be rescheduled due to industrial action.

“So I would kindly ask the shadow minister if he condemns these strikes.”
