In a significant step, Rishi Sunak has announced Britain’s largest ever military aid package for Ukraine, underscoring the country’s commitment to European security and resistance to Russian aggression.

Sunak’s announcement comes ahead of his visit to Poland and Germany to discuss European security and the threat posed by Russia.

The comprehensive aid package includes essential equipment such as vehicles, weapons and ammunition, along with a further £500 million in military funding, totaling £3 billion for the financial year.

“Defending Ukraine against Russia’s brutal ambitions is crucial for our security and for all of Europe. If Putin is allowed to succeed in this war of aggression, he will not stop at the Polish border,” Sunak said ahead of the trip.

“Ukraine’s armed forces continue to fight valiantly, but they need our support – and they need it now. (This) package will ensure that Ukraine has everything it needs to take the fight to Russia.

“The UK will always play its role at the forefront of European security, defending our national interests and supporting our NATO allies.”

UK support to Ukraine has been significant, with almost £12 billion pledged for military, humanitarian and economic aid since February 2022. The latest funding will strengthen Ukraine’s frontline defenses with vital equipment and supplies.

According to reports, the package includes 60 offshore attack craft and submarine boats; more than 1,600 offensive and air defense missiles; more than 400 vehicles, including 160 “Husky” protected mobility vehicles and 162 armored vehicles; as well as almost 4 meters of small arms ammunition.

Grant Shapps, the Secretary of Defense, emphasized the importance of this assistance in supporting President Zelenskyy and Ukraine’s efforts to restore peace and stability in Europe.

In addition to military aid, Sunak’s visit to Poland will focus on strengthening ties between Britain and Poland, with discussions on defense and security cooperation. Britain also plans to deploy an RAF Typhoon squadron for NATO air policing over Poland next year, further strengthening defense cooperation between the two countries.

With this historic military aid package, Britain reaffirms its stand against Russian aggression and its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region.

According to reports, around 400 British troops are based full-time in Poland, while around 8,000 have taken part in NATO’s Steadfast Defender exercise in Poland, the alliance’s largest since the Cold War.
