‘She may never wake up’: family of woman in coma after Miramar collision still looking for answers – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

HOLLYWOOD, FLA. (WSVN) – A South Florida family is still praying for answers after a woman is left in a coma following a collision.

7News reported on April 6 that Onyxia Delinois was running Saturday morning, eastbound along Miramar Parkway near 183rd Street, when a driver struck her and took off.

The group of women walking with Onyxia called 911.

“Tell me exactly what happened,” a dispatcher said.

“Um, we’re a group of runners and one of our friends is standing on the side of the road. It looks like she got hit,” a female caller said.

Delinois was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood and has been in a coma since.

“She has very, very serious and critical head injuries,” said Dr. Andrew Rosenthal. “She underwent brain surgery and has been in a coma ever since.”

Onyxia’s husband Roosevelt Delinois was by her side.

“I haven’t slept at home since this happened,” Roosevelt said. “At the moment she is healing a lot better from her neck down than before, but the brain damage is very serious. So it will take a little longer to heal.”

At this point, it remains to be seen whether Onyxia can heal from her head injury and wake up from her coma.

“She could wake up next week, she could wake up next month, it could be four months, and the doctors say she may never wake up again, but I believe she will,” Roosevelt said.

The family said Onyxia has always had a fighting spirit and Roosevelt said she is in the biggest fight of her life.

“It has been extremely difficult, my wife and I are very close, she is my best friend and I have not spoken to her since this happened. This is the longest she has been through in the almost eight years we have been together. “I didn’t talk to me,” Roosevelt said. “I talk to her every day.”

For Roosevelt these were the most difficult weeks; his wife and best friend were unable to speak while the person who hit her moved on with his life.

“What if it’s someone you know who takes the lead, or you take the lead yourself, this could happen to you, this could happen to your family members,” Roosevelt said. “Someone knows something, I’m just asking the community to come out and say something.”

As Onyxia fights, the community is rallying and organizing a 10km run for Onyxia, which will be held on Saturday, April 27 at 7am in Miramar.

“My wife has the greatest fighting spirit I know, she is super smart and always determined and always executes. She never lets me down and I’m pretty sure she will wake up,” Roosevelt said.

The family has set up a GoFundMe to help cover hospital costs as they work to help Onyxia recover. If you would like to donate, click here.
