The reconstruction of the Silvanus Hotel in Visegrád, which suffered major fire damage earlier this year, is now underway and work is expected to be completed in the fall.

The top floor and roof structure of the Silvanus Hotel, a four-star hotel, burned down in March. The restoration started with a contribution of HUF 60 million from the Hungarian Tourist Board (MTÜ). On the weekend of the fire, 143 of the 151 rooms were occupied by guests and there was an international conference in the hotel.

The hotel is one of the most visited in the region, making it an essential business as it accounts for 46% of Visegrád’s domestic accommodation revenue, according to a press release to the Budapest Business Journal. By 2023, four-star hotels generated 34% of the region’s revenue and 57% of accommodation revenue.

The government has financially supported the recovery of the tourism sector after the pandemic. It also boosted market competitiveness through a six-point sector support package and an energy efficiency improvement programme.

“The damaged hotel is one of the most important flagship operators in the region. For example, Hotel Silvanus accounted for over a fifth (22%) of all overnight stays in Visegrad last year and 4% of the region’s total domestic accommodation. An early recovery is in the interest of the sector,” says László Könnyid, CEO of MTÜ.

The Silvanus Hotel won the Hotel of the Year award in 2018 and was the first ‘green hotel’ in the country. It has more than 100 employees and offers work opportunities for families thanks to the tourist attractions, restaurants and shops nearby.

“Even in this period without income, we want to maintain our workforce,” says Árpád Lantos, the hotel owner. “That’s why we are grateful for all the help. The assistance of the MTÜ will allow us to restore and develop the hotel not only faster, but also more efficiently, and go further in greening the operation,” he added.
