Tell me about PAGES Inter-Africa Mobility Research Fellowship:

The program aims to provide limited travel and subsistence support to early-career researchers from African countries (PhD students and postdocs at African institutions), who are interested in gaining experience in another African country. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the development of collaborative research and the promotion of the paleoscience network in Africa.

Who is eligible?

We invite applications from outstanding early career scientists from African countries.

Applicants for PAGES Inter-Africa Mobility Research Fellowship must meet the following conditions:

– Be an early-career researcher, either in the final stages of completing their thesis/dissertation, or a postdoctoral researcher within five years of completing their PhD (including PhD students who have not held a postdoc position).
– Be a student or have a paid job in their home country at the time of application and during the grant period.
– Be a citizen of an African country and currently working or pursuing a PhD at an African institution.
– You are already working on a research topic within the scientific scope of PAGES.
– Be willing to conduct research in another African institute/country.
– Must secure the agreement of the host researcher/institution and provide a confirmation letter from the host researcher/institution as a condition for award of the grant.
– Demonstrate that the grant will not last less than two weeks or more than four weeks within a period of twelve months from the date of award.

How are applicants selected?

Awardees are selected based on the merit and quality of their application, which must include:

a) Completed application form, including:

– Description of proposed research and travel (max. 1000 words). Indicate how the objectives of the fellowship relate to the scientific scope of PAGES.
– Description of the impact of the fellowship on the development of your professional capabilities and its significance for your home institution/country (max. 200 words).
– Project timeline and results (maximum one month).
– Detailed budget in USD.

b) Two letters of recommendation (one from the current academic supervisor at the home institution and one from the supervisor at the host institution).

c) CV with the most important academic and professional achievements (max. 2 pages).

What is the benefit of the PAGES Inter-Africa Mobility Research Fellowship?

The program is intended to support the costs related to international travel and subsistence expenses abroad, i.e. the costs of flights (economy class), visas and accommodation (maintenance and housing) for the period of the exchange, exclusively for the fellow. The insurance is not covered by the subsidy. PAGES cannot be held responsible if the candidate is unable to travel for any reason (such as flight cancellation).

How long does the program last?

The scholarships are awarded for a short duration; between two and four weeks, and must be used within 12 months (winners will have up to 12 months to take up their fellowship once awarded).

How to apply for a PAGES Inter-Africa Mobility Research Fellowship:

  • The preferred language for applications is English; however, applications in French will be accepted.
  • Beneficiaries receive their subsidy money via bank transfer to a bank account specified by them.
  • Upon completion of the fellowship, fellows must email a final report in English to PAGES. It should include a financial report, a scientific report and a short article (650 words and one figure) to be published in Past Global Changes Magazine.
