Angie Harmon is speaking out for the first time since the delivery person shot and killed the family dog

Actress Angie Harmon is opening her doors for the first time after her family dog, Oliver, was shot and killed by a driver for an Instacart delivery to her North Carolina home.

“It’s so unfathomable to think that there’s someone in your driveway who just fired a gun,” Harmon told ABC News’ Juju Chang in an interview that aired Wednesday on “Good Morning America.” “And you’ll never forget that sound.”

She continued, “I’ve been playing law enforcement for thirty years. It’s different. It’s just so different.”

Harmon said she placed a grocery delivery order through Instacart in late April in preparation for her family’s Easter Sunday celebration.

The former “Rizzoli and Isles” actress said that during the delivery process, she communicated via text message with the customer, who she believed was a woman named Merle. She said she later discovered that the identity of the delivery person, a man, did not match the name on the Instacart app.

“It seemed like we were talking to a slightly older, middle-aged woman named Merle who was talking to me and talking to me about my order,” Harmon said. “And that’s not the one who showed up at my house.”

When the shot rang out, Harmon said she was upstairs and heard the reactions of two of her daughters, Emery, 15, and Avery, 18, whom she shares with ex-husband, former NFL player Jason Sehorn.

“I think we were so shocked,” Harmon said. “I yelled at Avery to call 911. And when I said that, the delivery person said, ‘No, I’m calling 911. I’ll do it.'”

In the call, reviewed by ABC News, the man can be heard telling the 911 operator that the dog tried to bite him and that he shot it in self-defense.

One of Harmon’s daughters also called 911 to report the incident.

Officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to the scene. In a statement to ABC News, a department spokesperson said: “The driver told officers that a dog attacked him while he was in the residence and that he defended himself by firing a single shot, striking and fatally striking the dog injured.”

Harmon told Chang that she saw no physical evidence that the delivery person had been attacked and said, “No, not at all.”

The actress also told Chang that an autopsy on Oliver showed no signs that he had bitten or violently attacked anyone.

Harmon’s daughters, Avery and Emery, told Chang that they never saw Oliver become aggressive toward delivery people.

“I order five Amazon packages a day, and it’s never been a problem,” Avery said.

Avery described the personality of Oliver, whom the family adopted from a shelter as a puppy: “He has always been very playful and very sweet. When he passed away, it was like a family member was gone.”

After the shooting, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police closed the case and declined to file charges.

Harmon has since filed a lawsuit against Instacart and the customer, alleging criminal trespass and negligence.

“First of all, I don’t think Instacart is responsible for any of this,” Harmon said, adding that she and her daughters have struggled with their mental health after the incident. “This should not have happened.”

Instacart told ABC News that it has “permanently deactivated” the delivery driver involved in the incident.

“While we cannot comment on pending litigation, we do not tolerate violence of any kind and the shopper account has been permanently deactivated from our platform,” the company said in a statement.

Instacart also told ABC News that it uses third-party background checks and takes steps to verify drivers’ identities. The company said its policy also does not allow carrying weapons.

Harmon said she is sharing her story publicly in hopes of raising awareness.

“People need to know that who they talk to on Instacart is not necessarily the person who shows up at your house,” she said.
