Discussions with the ILO about amending the labor law are underway: Anisul

Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq said on Sunday that a discussion is underway with the International Labor Organization (ILO) on amending the Bangladesh Labor Code on 41 points.

“We are discussing with the ILO about 41 points to amend the labor law. Of these, we discussed 17 points today during our approximately two and a half hour discussion. We will hold a discussion on the remaining 24 points tomorrow,” the minister noted after emerging from his meeting with the ILO delegation at the ministry, BSS reported.

Anisul said at the meeting that the ILO has provided some advice on amending Bangladesh’s labor law, adding: “We are discussing to what extent that advice makes sense for our country’s interests. A detailed discussion is underway about which of these opinions would be acceptable to us and which would not.”

Responding to a question on whether the discussion was satisfactory, the Justice Minister said there were some topics that were certainly satisfactory as the discussion was conducted in detail. He said the meeting will also take place today, starting at 11:30 am.

A six-member ILO delegation, led by Country Office Director Tuomo Poutiainen, took part in the discussion, while Md. Golam Sarwar, Secretary, Law and Justice Department, and Md. Mahbub Hossain, Minister of Labor and Employment, were present at the meeting.
