“We are prepared to take action as we deem necessary against companies that seriously undermine security in both Ukraine and Europe,” the official said ahead of Blinken’s trip.

“And I think we’ve shown our willingness to do that with companies from a number of countries, not just China,” he added. “Either way, I think this will be a major topic of discussion while we’re in Beijing.”

The official also said the US is prepared to take action against companies that significantly undermine security in Ukraine and Europe, not just those from China.

Chinese support for the Russian military in Ukraine is a major concern for US allies in Europe, and Blinken is expected to raise the issue during his visit.

This will be Blinken’s second trip to China, following a diplomatic mission last June to ease tensions between the US and China. During his visit, he will meet senior Chinese officials, including the foreign minister Wang Yi.

Why it matters: The US has increased pressure on China over its support for the Russian military. Earlier this month, the US Treasury Secretary said Janet Jellen warned Chinese banks and exporters against helping Russia’s military capabilities, citing possible sanctions.

Yellen’s caution followed Secretary of State Blinken’s statement to EU and NATO foreign ministers noting that Beijing’s assistance to Moscow, including instruments, inputs and technical expertise, was at an alarming pace. level.

Earlier in April, Blinken also expressed concern about the military aid the Russian defense sector receives from North Korea, Iran and China.
