Russia accuses the US of trying to destabilize India during the Lok Sabha elections.

During the 2024 general elections in Indiathe Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has accused US of seeking to destabilize the country following a US federal commission report criticizing New Delhi for alleged violations of religious freedom.

This was reported by RT News, a news network of the Russian government and spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova stated that WashingtonHis criticism lacks insight into India’s national mentality and history. She termed the allegations regarding religious freedoms as baseless and disrespectful to India as a sovereign nation. Zakharova alleged that such US actions are aimed at disrupting India’s internal political landscape and complicating the ongoing elections, which constitutes clear interference in Indian affairs.

The accusations arose following the annual report of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), which criticized India for alleged violations of religious freedom and renewed its recommendation that India become a “Land of special interest“. The report

specifically pointed out the BJP’s nationalist policies and enforcement of various laws alleging arbitrary detention and targeting religious minorities and their advocates.

In response, India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the USCIRF’s actions as attempts to interfere in India’s electoral process and spread misinformation. Spokesman Randhir Jaiswal dismissed the USCIRF as a biased entity with a political agenda, claiming that their attempts to influence India’s democratic exercise would not succeed.

Moreover, Moscow rejected allegations of Indian involvement in an assassination plot Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, highlighting Washington’s lack of reliable evidence. Zakharova criticized The Washington Post’s report and suggested that the term “repressive regime” be applied to Washington itself, given its domestic and international policies.

The Indian Foreign Ministry dismissed The Washington Post’s report as baseless and baseless, highlighting its speculative and irresponsible nature.
