Minor tremors recorded near Gujarat city

Talala, a town in Gir Somnath district of Gujarat, was hit by a magnitude 3.7 quake on Wednesday afternoon, which was soon followed by another quake of magnitude 3.4, the Institute of Seismological Research said (ISR).

The magnitude 3.7 quake was recorded at 3.14 pm with the epicenter about 13 kilometers to the north-northeast (NNE) of Talala in the Saurashtra region of the state, the ISR said in its report.

At 3:18 p.m., another magnitude 3.4 earthquake struck the epicenter 12 km NNE of Talala.

No damage to life or property was reported, the district administration said.

An earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter in Kutch, shook Gujarat on January 26, 2001. It was the third largest and second most destructive in India in two centuries. A large number of towns and villages in the district were almost completely destroyed, killing around 13,800 people and injuring 1.67 lakh.
