“(…) this editorial underlines the complex landscape of molecular diagnoses of cancer in the (Latin American) population.”

BUFFALO, NY- 3rd of May2024 – A new editorial has been published in Oncoscience (Part 11) on April 22, 2024, titled: “Investigating molecular changes in the oncogenic driver in Spanish-speaking/Latino cancer patients: a call for better molecular understanding.”

In this new editorial, researcher Rafael Parra-Medina by Fundación Universitaria de Ciencias de la Salud And Instituto Nacional de Cancerologia begins by discussing the population of Latin America (LA) – a heterogeneous mix of Native American, African, and Caucasian ancestry with varying proportions in different regions. Countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Uruguay and Venezuela have a higher proportion of white people, while regions in Mexico, Peru and Bolivia have a higher proportion of Native American ancestry. Although the overall incidence of cancer in Latin American countries is generally lower than in high-income countries, the mortality rate is significantly higher.

“This disparity can be attributed to several factors, including smoking habits, diet quality, levels of physical activity, access to health care services, and availability of cancer screening programs (3).”

Although advances in the understanding of oncogenic molecular changes have led to targeted therapies that improve outcomes, the diversity in this population presents unique challenges. For example, the prevalence of mutations in lung cancer patients varies significantly between different ethnic groups, indicating the need for tailored approaches in diagnosis and treatment.

“That’s why we need to improve molecular diagnostics, molecular research and access to healthcare for cancer patients in LA. This is crucial for effective management, reflecting the need for more personalized and region-specific medical interventions.”
