Officer Taylor Dibble was dispatched to the scene and found the sealed bag with a rabbit’s mouth and nose visible and a knot around the neck.

Using a key, Dibble carefully tore open the bag, which was tied with several tight knots, to provide the rabbits with oxygen.

A total of eight baby rabbits, estimated to be one to two weeks old, were rescued from the bag.

Tragically, one of the rabbits had already died when they arrived at the Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) shelter in Romeo.

The seven surviving rabbits were dehydrated and near hypothermia, but DAWG staff were able to stabilize them using an incubator.

The rabbits are cared for at the sanctuary until they are old enough to be released back into the wild.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham praised Deputy Dibble’s quick actions and stated

“The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office takes situations of animal abuse and cruelty very seriously. I commend Deputy Taylor Dibble for diligently responding to the call and giving these animals a chance at life.”

Authorities are now looking for the suspect, described as a younger to middle-aged white male driving a small red Chevrolet car.
