Sudanese military leader’s son dies from injuries following a motorcycle accident in Turkey

Turkey’s state news agency says the son of Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah Burhan has died two months after he was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in the Turkish capital Ankara.

ANKARA, Turkey – The son of Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah Burhan died in hospital on Friday, two months after he was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in the Turkish capital Ankara, Turkey’s state news agency reported.

Mohammed Fattah Burhan Rahman has been being treated in a hospital in Ankara since the March 6 accident in which his motorcycle collided with a vehicle on the outskirts of the city, Anadolu Agency said.

The private news agency DHA said he was thrown several meters from his motorcycle by the impact of the collision and was treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Burhan, Sudan’s de facto leader, and other family members were informed of the death, DHA reported.

There was no immediate statement from Turkish authorities. Sudanese embassy officials could not be reached for comment.

In mid-April 2023, Sudan plunged into chaos as long-simmering tensions between the army led by Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces led by Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo erupted into street fighting in the capital Khartoum. The fighting has spread to other parts of the country, especially urban areas and the western region of Darfur.

Earlier this year, the Somali president’s son was convicted by a Turkish court of “causing death by negligence” after a diplomatic car he was riding in hit a motorcycle courier on the Istanbul highway. The court sentenced him to 2.5 years in prison, but later commuted the sentence to a fine.
