BJP’s Hyderabad candidate Madhavi Latha in fix over ‘arrow gesture’; will be charged

BJP candidate for Hyderabad Madhavi Latha has been booked for hurting religious sentiments after she was caught on camera ‘shooting an arrow’ at a place of worship during her election campaign.

Latha, who is facing AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, was seen shooting an imaginary arrow towards a mosque. The video went viral on social media following which a resident of Hyderabad filed a complaint against her on Sunday.

According to the complainant, during a Ram Navami procession on April 17, Madhavi Latha made a gesture of drawing an arrow and firing it at the place of worship, thereby hurting the sentiments of the Muslim community.

The case was registered on April 20 under Section 295-A (intentional and malicious acts intended to outrage religious sentiments of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code, they said . The matter has also been referred to the Election Commission.

Her gesture also drew criticism from Owaisi, who said the arrow was aimed at the peace and tranquility of the city. At his first public meeting after filing his nomination from Hyderabad constituency, Asaduddin Owaisi alleged that Madhavi Latha’s alleged gesture was aimed at weakening peace among Hindus and Muslims in the city.

“You saw a BJP candidate gesturing to shoot an arrow in the direction of a mosque. If you feel even a little bit of pain, you should not vote for the party, but for that ‘ibadatgah’ (prayer). If you continue to sleep even now, when will you get up,” said Asaduddin Owaisi.

“That imaginary arrow was not aimed at a mosque, but at the peace and tranquility of Hyderabad. It showed their (BJP) intention to destroy the peace of Hyderabad. It was done to weaken the peace between Hindus and Muslims. You can have differences with me, but peace in the city is for everyone,” he added.

However, after the clip went viral, Madhavi Latha said in a post on X that she noticed that an incomplete video of her was being circulated to create negativity. “I would like to clarify that it is an incomplete video and even if anyone is hurt by such a video, I would like to apologize as I respect all individuals,” she had said.

She further clarified her position and added that the complaint filed against her was ridiculous. “This is ridiculous. If I am against Muslims then why should I participate in Hazrat Ali Saab ka Juloos which took place on Ramzan. I have distributed food to many people with my own hands,” she told ANI.

“On the occasion of Ram Navami… for a Dhanush that did not exist, for the Tar (arrow) that did not exist, and for the reaction of the tar that came out and that was not there, they made a fake video of me. ..They have leveled an allegation and registered an FIR…”

On allegations that her gesture was provocative to the Muslims, she said the mosque was nowhere in view when her gesture was captured on camera. “One man said that I provoked the Muslims. It was a festival moment. You are crossing a certain road and on my mobile phone and other mobile phones where this act was recorded, the mosque was not in the picture,” the BJP said. candidate said.
