October 7 attack: Israeli military intelligence chief resigns, admits failure

The head of Israel’s Intelligence Directorate, Major General Aharon Haliva, has resigned after failing to prevent the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.

The Israeli military announced Major General Haliva’s decision in a statement on Monday, April 22.

According to the statement, Haliva will relinquish his position and retire from the force once his successor has been appointed.

“Major General Aharon Haliva, in coordination with the Chief of the General Staff, has requested to resign from his position following his leadership responsibility as head of the Intelligence Directorate for the events of October 7.

“It was decided that MG Aharon Haliva will terminate his position and withdraw from the IDF (army) once his successor has been appointed in an orderly and professional process.”

In his resignation letter, Haliva, who took responsibility for the failure that led to the loss of life in Israel, confessed that the division under his command had failed to fulfill the responsibility entrusted to it.

With deep regret, the military chief said he would live to bear the pain caused by his failure and that of the war.

His words:

“On Saturday, October 7, 2023, Hamas carried out a deadly surprise attack on the State of Israel,” he wrote in the letter, a copy of which the military gave to journalists.

“The intelligence department under my command failed to fulfill the task entrusted to us.

“I have carried that black day with me ever since. Day after day, night after night. I will carry the terrible pain of the war with me forever.”

Meanwhile, Iran had activated its air defense batteries when explosions were reportedly heard near the airbase in Isfahan province, Aljazeera said.

The explosion took place amid regional tensions following a retaliatory attack by Iran on Israel following the latter’s attack on its consulate in Syria.
