**Hubballi murder case under investigation by CID, special court to be set up: Karnataka CM**

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday said his government has decided to transfer the Hubballi student murder case to the Crime Investigation Department and a special court will be set up for its speedy disposal.

Neha Hiremath (23), daughter of Congress councilor of Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation Niranjan Hiremath, was allegedly stabbed to death on the campus of BVB College on Thursday.

The accused Fayaz Khondunaik, who fled from the scene, was subsequently arrested by the police.

Neha was a first year Master of Computer Application (MCA) student and Fayaz was previously her classmate.

”We have decided to give it to the CoD (CID). We will set up a special court for it. The chargesheet should be filed within a time limit and the case should be disposed of, the special court said,” Siddaramaiah said. Responding to a question from a reporter, he said: β€œI have not been able to go to her (parents) house. Our district-in-charge minister and party workers had disappeared. HK Patil (Law Minister) is also going. I will go if I go there (Hubballi).” The murder case, which sparked widespread outrage, has turned into a political slugfest between the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP. While the ruling party has tried to portray the incident as one with a personal angle, the saffron party has termed it a ‘love jihad’ case and said it is a testimony to the deterioration of law and order in the state.

The BJP’s student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and other organizations aligned with Hindutva outfits have staged protests to demand justice and called for stiff punishment for the accused. Similar protests have been reported in several other places.

The number of crimes has come down during the Congress rule, the chief minister claimed. β€œIn 2023 (Congress rule), there were 1,295 (crime cases). From 2019-2022, during four years of BJP, they were 1,300, 1,318, 1,342 and 1,370 respectively.” ”We will provide protection to everyone during our tenure. I strongly condemn the murder of Neha. We are forming a special court, and we have transferred the case to COD (CID to investigate). Neha’s father has spoken about the involvement of four more suspects, I have asked to investigate that too,” he added.
