NU baseball to GMAC semifinals

Northwood’s baseball team avoided elimination twice and reached the semifinals of the GMAC tournament on Thursday with a 7-6 victory over Ohio Dominican, followed by a 10-4 victory over Findlay in a pair of win-or-go-home games in Mason. , Ohio.

Against ODU, Kendall Anthes picked up the win and improved to 7-0, playing 5 2/3 innings and allowing five runs on six hits and three walks.

Matt Magno went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in and scored twice for the Timberwolves, while Blake Salamon had two hits with a triple and two RBIs, Drew Charters doubled and drove in two runs, and Joey Johnston had two hits and a RBI.

Against Findlay, Jeff Metzger (2-0) earned the win in relief, pitching two innings and allowing one run on two hits and five walks.

Logan Voth had a great game for the Timberwolves, going 4-for-5 with three doubles, an RBI and four runs scored, while Salamon went 3-for-4 and homered twice, drove in four runs and scored twice, and Magno hit 3 -for-5 with a homerun and a double, drove in three runs and scored three times.

Northwood will take on Tiffin on Friday at noon. If the Timberwolves win that game, the two teams will play again next to earn a spot in the championship game.

NOW SOFTBALL FALLS HARD IN NCAA OPENER

The Northwood softball team opened their NCAA tournament with an 8-0 loss in five innings against Trevecca Nazarene in a Midwest region opener Thursday.

The Trojans quickly took a 5-0 lead after a two-run homer in the first inning, followed by a three-run homer in the second. Trevecca added a run in the fourth and two in the fifth on a third homer to invoke the mercy rule.

Northwood star Emily Cox (19-6) took the loss, giving up five runs on four hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings.

The Timberwolves scored just four goals in the game.

NU will play an elimination game against Ohio Dominican or Grand Valley State on Friday at 2:30 p.m

NOW’S COX APPOINTED SECOND ALL-REGION TEAM

Northwood senior pitcher Emily Cox has been named Second Team All-Midwest Region.

Cox led the Timberwolves to their first-ever GMAC Tournament championship, earning First Team All-GMAC honors after going 19-5 with a 1.23 earned run average and 138 strikeouts with just 31 walks in 159 innings.
