Scam Alert: Florida Attorney General’s Shutdown of Fake Sunpass Websites

Earlier today in Orlando, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody issued warning Floridians of a new smishing scam targeting drivers. According to an official press release from Moody’s office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation reports that scammers are sending fraudulent text messages to individuals claiming unpaid tolls and providing links to pay off the alleged debts. However, these links are malicious and intended to steal victims’ money. These scams also target E-ZPass users. Attorney General Moody’s Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unitwork with Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) recently shut down ten rogue websites.

“Cybercriminals are sending text messages to thousands of unsuspecting motorists in the hope that some of them will be duped into paying a toll for a violation that never happened,” said Moody. “While these scams are taking place across the country, our Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit has been working closely with FDLE to shut down ten fraudulent sites designed to impersonate the official SunPass website and steal payments from drivers who use their fake received text messages.”

Florida Department of Law Enforcement Deputy Commissioner Vaden Pollard commended the team at Moody’s for giving FDLE the resources to prosecute such a digital fraud case.

“FDLE’s Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit was able to quickly seize the fraudulent websites, stopping the victimization,” Pollard said. “Thanks to Attorney General Ashley Moody, FDLE has the investigative resources and expertise to take swift action when it matters most.”
