Looking for shade under teak trees in summer can be risky: here’s why | Health

It can be tempting to seek shade under the teak trees that line the roads in Kerala in summer. However, in April and May it can be risky and probably harmful to your health. During this time, leaf moths, which consume teak leaves, take over the trees and often fall off the leaves as well. Although they pose no direct threat to humans, you may experience irritation or allergic reactions if you come into contact with their larvae. If you have sensitive skin, it can also cause redness, swelling and itching. If the moths touch your clothes, they can crack and stain the fabric.

Here’s how to stay safe if there’s a risk of exposure to the moths:
1)If you are likely to spend extended periods of time outdoors, maintain a safe distance from trees infested with moths. Also apply skin-safe repellents to exposed skin. You may also consider wearing protective clothing that provides maximum skin coverage and removing any insect residue from it as soon as you remove it.

2)If you experience skin irritation, seek medical attention immediately. If this is not available, rinse the affected area with mild soap and water to remove any irritants. You can also use an ice pack wrapped in a cloth to soothe the skin. Avoid scratching as this would increase the risk of infection.
3) Judicious use of insecticides may be considered to control the moth population. However, it must be done carefully with the help of experts so that damage to beneficial insects is avoided. Light traps can also be used to reduce their numbers.
