These are the best barbecue spots in the US, says Yelp. Five are in the Kansas City area

According to Yelp, five of the nation’s top 100 barbecue spots are in the Kansas City metro.

The crowdsourced review site has released its annual list, curating the best barbecue restaurants based on rating and number of reviews.

Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que came sixth, with Yelp noting that the burnt ends and Z-man sandwich were customer favorites.

“The burnt ends with a side of macaroni and cheese were so delicious that I kept doing the happy dance hours after we left,” wrote one Yelper.

Joe’s was founded in 1996 in a gas station in Kansas City, Kansas at 3002 W. 47th Ave. and has locations in Olathe (11950 S. Strang Line Road) and Leawood (11723 Roe Ave.).

Downtown Q39 (1000 W. 39th St.) came in at number 15. (It also has a location in Overland Park.)

Scott’s Kitchen and Catering at Hangar 29 (11920 N. Ambassador Drive) came in 35th. Slap’s BBQ (553 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kansas) came in at number 95, and Westport’s Char Bar (4050 Pennsylvania Ave.) came in at 98th.

So who has topped Kansas City, birthplace of burnt ends and barbecue capital of the world?

Texas had two in the top five: CorkScrew BBQ in Spring and Tyler’s Barbecue in Amarillo. Reviewers were impressed with their chest options.

First place went to Wright’s Barbecue in Johnson, Arkansas. Reviewers raved about the burnt ends of bacon, kale and loaded mac ‘n cheese.

“The burnt ends of bacon were unique and amazing; and the BBQ sauces were all top notch,” wrote one Yelp user.
