Wildlife Waterhole Survey: Annual survey of wildlife waterholes on Buddha Purnima | Pune News

Pune: The Pune forest department will conduct the annual census of wild waterholes on May 23, the night of Buddha Purnima, when the moonlight is strongest in the region. The counting will take place from 3 pm to 10 am the next day in all sanctuaries including Bhimashankar Sanctuary, Mayureshwar Supe Sanctuary, Tamhini Ghat and in the grassland areas of Saswad and Solapur. “We saw several animals during the census, including Sambhar deer and leopards. This count is carried out for record keeping purposes and to ensure that the nature reserves are in good condition. The scientific census takes place every four years,” said Tushar Chavan, Deputy Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Pune. Chavan said the number of animals has increased drastically over the years due to good living conditions in protected areas. The annual wildlife census is conducted with the help of forest officials and public volunteers. The report of this program will be submitted to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) of Maharashtra. The main shrines are closed to the public on May 22 and 23.
