Sky’s Angel Reese will have WNBA’s popularity rocketing after bold celebrity declaration

Angel Reese is starting a new journey after a stellar college tenure with the LSU women’s basketball journey. The star forward made a promising WNBA debut against the Minnesota Lynx on May 3rd and had another strong showing in Chicago’s dominant win over the New York Liberty Tuesday. Moreover, Reese made an eye-opening remark on stars like Usher and Cardi B attending future Sky games.

New Chicago Bears rookies Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze sat courtside for the Sky-Liberty game Tuesday night. Williams is an acquaintance of Reeses’, but he is not the only star she has connections with.

“The celebrities gone be courtside…just know. I was just talking, I was at the Met Gala…Usher is going to try to come up to a game in Vegas, and Cardi B,” Reese revealed to reporters at a Sky press conference on Wednesday.

“I know some people that ya’ll might not think I know, but I know,” Reese added before the room erupted in laughter.

Admittedly, looking over to see Usher or Cardi B sitting courtside would be awesome. Reese may have some impressive links with big-time artists and entertainers, but her star power was enough to get the job done in Chicago’s second preseason game.

Reese amassed 13 points, five rebounds, and two steals in 18 minutes of action against the Liberty. She shot 60 percent from the field and gave Chicago energy that allowed them to keep pressure on New York. The Sky were without the services of Reese’s fellow rookie and old SEC running mate Kamilla Cardoso.

Cardoso suffered a shoulder injury against the Lynx on May 3rd and is expected to miss four to six weeks. In the meantime, Reese and her teammates will attempt to hold things down. Perhaps Chicago can get a boost from the anticipated celebrity crowd Reese Spoke of.

Sky looks forward to starting an exciting 2024 WNBA season

Chicago finished the 2023 WNBA season with an 18-22 record, which ranked them fourth in the Eastern Conference standings. The Sky made the WNBA Playoffs as an eighth seed and took on the eventual champion Las Vegas Aces. Chicago fought hard but was swept 2-0. Their showing was slightly surprising considering their previous impressive runs in 2021 and 2022.

The Sky won the 2021 WNBA Championship under the leadership of Candace Parker, Kahleah Copper, and Courtney Vandersloot. They followed their incredible feat with a 26-10 regular season campaign in 2022, which saw them earn the second seed in the playoffs. Chicago advanced to the semifinals but lost 3-2 to a talented Connecticut Sun team.

Many changes have happened since Chicago’s last run. Most notably, former head coach James Wade (who led Chicago to their first franchise title) stepped down to become an assistant with the Toronto Raptors. In addition, All-Star guards Courtney Vandersloot and Kahleah Copper are no longer on the team. Vandersloot departed for the New York Liberty, and the Sky traded Copper to the Phoenix Mercury.

Nevertheless, Angel Reese and the rest of the revamped Sky squad look for newfound success as the 2024 season prepares to take off.
