The first black woman to sit on the bench of the Constitutional Court has died.

Judge Yvonne Mokgoro reportedly died in a Johannesburg hospital on May 9, 2024. Mokgoro’s death came after she was seriously injured in a car accident near Kimberley, Northern Cape, in April 2024.

Judge Yvonne Mokgoro’s career

Mokgoro served as a judge at the Constitutional Court from the dawn of democracy in 1994 until she completed her fifteen-year term in 2009. After leaving court, the judge became chair of an independent panel of experts investigating the 2012 stampede at the University of Johannesburg.
