Science fair champions from Burlington, Oakville and Milton go to competitions in Los Angeles, Ottawa


Milton Burlington Oakville Science Fair Winners

Several students from Burlington, Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills were recognized for their entries in the 64th annual Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair, held recently at Mohawk College in Hamilton.

Of the 154 entries from Halton District School Board students, 70 projects earned awards, with cash prizes totaling $17,500 and scholarships worth $81,000.

In addition, two projects will advance to the International Science & Engineering Fair and five projects will advance to the Canada Wide Science Fair.

“The Halton District School Board is very proud of our students, not only for the great results they have achieved, but also for the hard work, determination and innovative thinking they have shown by taking part in this science fair,” said Nick Frankovich, Chief Inspector of Education, Responsibility for Learning and Achievement.

“These impressive achievements serve as an inspiration to us all and demonstrate the incredible potential of young minds in shaping the future of science and technology.”

Here are some of the award winners:

Primary Fluid Systems Best in Fair Pinnacle Award

Maya LeBlanc, 11th grade Abbey Park High School, for the project Analyzing CD16+, CD16- and CD4+ T Cells to Identify Novel Gene Signatures and Diagnostics for SLE.

LeBlanc is eligible for the International Science & Engineering Fair in Los Angeles and the Canada Wide Science Fair in Ottawa.

Anthony Efthimiadis, Grade 9 Oakville Trafalgar High School, for the project, Instant Skin Cancer Diagnosis: AI Hybrid Neural Networks with Accurate Evolution Tracking.

Efthimiadis is eligible for the International Science & Engineering Fair in Los Angeles.

Canada-wide Science Fair Awards

Shangyi Zhang, Grade 11 White Oaks Secondary School, for the project A Bimodal Robot for Adaptability in Diverse Environments with Rolling Locomotion and Gait.

Evan Budz, 8th grade Charles R. Beaudoin Public School, for the Virtual Lifeguard: A Novel AI Approach to Drowning Prevention project.

Daniyal Qazi and Zayn Qazi, Grade 7 WH Morden Public School, for the project From Pixels to Predictions: A Deep Learning Method to Detect Pneumonia in Chest X-rays

Imran Allarakhia and Mithru Naidu, Grade 8 WH Morden Public School, for the project LiquiViz: Adaptive AI for 3D Object Detection and Semantic Segmentation in Low Vision Devices
